The race, contested over 82 laps, was the sixteenth and final race of the 1987 Formula One season and was won by Gerhard Berger, who started from pole position and led every lap in his Ferrari. Ayrton Senna finished second in his Lotus-Honda but was subsequently disqualified, thus promoting Berger's team-mate Michele Alboreto to second and the Benetton-Ford of Thierry Boutsen to third.
